Remembering father dying (from Green Messiah)

October 29, 2011

He remembers my dad’s chest lifting and falling, lifting and falling, like some sort of machine, like waves rolling up some mighty beach. I didn’t believe that the waves would ever stop rolling or the machine could ever stop – then suddenly they would stop and there would be a pause in dad’s breathing… and my own heart would seem to stop too, and I would think he was dying – and yet I’d feel certain he could never die. I would lean forward and stare into his face, not daring to touch his hand, holding my own breath too, trying to understand what it was that was happening, trying to understand what it would mean if that painful, powerful breathing stopped, what it would mean for me and Molly and mum… Looking into my father’s face I wondered what death would mean for him. Where would he go? What would he be? And then his breathing would begin again.

Gadhafi – a shot to the head

October 25, 2011

Sudden.

Abrupt.

After a crescendo of chaos: this.

His just deserts.

(A fitting epitaph for the sponsors of war?)

Gadhafi slaughtered like a dog

October 22, 2011

So this is how it ends – a brutal life in a brutal death.

Is this how it was meant to end? Is this how we were meant to be?

Is Libya legitimate now? Propped up by bombings and a massive influx of arms?

Have we been right to act as goad and shepherd to this war?

Is it possible that things could have been done in a different way?

If we were one single family and these were our children would we encourage one to kill the other?

Or would we try to seek a less bloodyand less violent and more subtle path?
